5 DIY House-Cleaning Recipes Made with Essential Oils

Most common cleaning products you find in your grocery store are loaded with toxic and polluting chemicals and ingredients designed to make your life easier.  But at what cost to your health? 

A growing number of non-toxic varieties are becoming available, yet these are still contributing to landfill and environmental impact. You can do your part for the environment and for your health by making your own at home.  

Here are 5 DIY natural-cleaning recipes to get you started! 

All Natural Mold & Mildew Spray 

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 cup vinegar 
  • 10 drops lemon essential oil 
  • 10 drops tea tree essential oil 

METHOD

  1. Add vinegar to a spray bottle with the essential oils. 
  2. Put on spray top and shake to mix well. 
  3. Spray anti-mold solution on the surface you wish to clean. 
  4. Let it sit for 1 hour. 
  5. Wipe clean. 
  6. You may need to spray again. 
  7. Allow to air dry.

All-Purpose Cleaner

INGREDIENTS

  • ¼ cup white vinegar 
  • 2 cups water 
  • 20-30 drops of essential oils 
  • 1 tsp borax 

METHOD

  1. Add all ingredients to the spray bottle. 
  2. Put on spray top and shake to mix well. 

Air Freshener

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 cup water
  • 10-15 drops of your favorite essential oils 

Eucalyptus and tea tree essential oils are great for deodorizing. 

Lavender essential oil is great for relaxation. 

METHOD

  1. Add water to a spray bottle with the essential oils. 
  2. Put on spray top and shake to mix well. 

Liquid Toilet Cleaner

INGREDIENTS

  • 1/2 cup baking soda 
  • 1/2 cup castile soap 
  • 15 drops Tea Tree Essential Oil 
  • 15 drops Eucalyptus Essential Oil 
  • 1 cup of water
  • Sealable bottle 

METHOD

  1. Add all of the ingredients to a large bowl and whisk together well.
  2. Use a funnel to transfer the ingredients to a sealable bottle.
  3. Squirt or pour a generous amount into your toilet bowl (about 1/4 cup).
  4. Use a toilet scrub brush or sponge to spread the toilet cleaner around the inside of your bowl, scrub under the rim and the entire inside of your toilet bowl. Once you are finished, simply flush the toilet to rinse! 

Disinfectant

INGREDIENTS

  • 1/2 cup high-proof vodka or rubbing alcohol 
  • 1/2 cup white distilled vinegar
  • 3/4 cup water
  • 50-60 drops tea tree essential oil or lavender essential oil

METHOD

  1. Add water to a spray bottle with the essential oils. 
  2. Put on spray top and shake to mix well.
